What are Wisdom Teeth?
The wisdom teeth are the final set of molars to erupt in your mouth. Since they are located in the very back of your mouth, they will often become impacted, meaning they are unable to erupt into your mouth. Sometimes, they make their way partially through the gums but are unable to continue which is known as partially erupted. When wisdom teeth fully erupt, they are hard to clean because of their location. In most cases, wisdom teeth become decayed and require difficult fillings to restore them.
Why Do Wisdom Teeth Need To Be Removed?
While some people never develop wisdom teeth and for some, they erupt normally. In many cases, as wisdom teeth grow in, they become impacted and fail to emerge due to inadequate jaw space.
Wisdom Teeth Extraction is suggested when the teeth are impacted or when they grow in at the wrong angle due to teeth crowding, or there is simply not enough space in your jaw to accommodate them. Additionally, your wisdom teeth can already have cavities, and they are also recommended to be removed.
Not removing the Wisdom Teeth, can lead to swelling, gum soreness, and even acute pain. When the teeth are impacted, they are very susceptible to tooth decay, recurring infections, and can even damage the surrounding bone structure leading to further teeth loss.
The Wisdom Teeth Extraction Process
Your Wisdom Teeth Extractions will take place here in our SE Calgary dental office. In some cases, patients may decide to undergo Sedation Dentistry to help ease their fear and anxiety about the visit. Depending on the number of wisdom teeth we are extracting and how difficult the procedure will be, most patients can expect their treatment to take between 1-2 hours to complete.
Care After Your Wisdom Teeth Extractions
The recovery period after your wisdom teeth extraction can be up to one week. Using an ice pack on the outside of your cheeks will help to reduce swelling. It is important for you to take time off from all vigorous physical activity to prevent complications. Until the extraction sites have healed, avoid using a straw and spitting. Continue brushing your teeth and tongue daily.
