What Services Does a Dental Hygienist Provide?
Dental Hygienists are trained to offer complete Dental Hygiene services, including:
- Scaling: Cleaning the surfaces above and below the gumline to remove calculus buildup
- Root Planing: A deeper cleaning below the gumline that focuses on the removal of calculus from the root surfaces while smoothing out any ridged areas that trap bacteria and calculus.
- Polish: Using a specially designed pumice, a polish removes surface stains and plaque from the teeth and slightly below the gumline.
- Fluoride: A fluoride treatment is recommended after your cleaning to strengthening the teeth to reduce cavities.
Your visit to our Dental Hygienists will begin with a Physical Exam of your teeth so we can check for any issues that may have cropped up since your last visit. The next step will be to scale your teeth so they can remove any plaque or tartar that has built up on your teeth. If your scaling has progressed to below the gum line, you may require a more in-depth treatment called a root planing. When your scaling is complete, we will then polish your teeth to remove any residual tartar and then provide you with an optional Fluoride Treatment. Fluoride is excellent at protecting your teeth and fighting cavities.
By visiting our dental clinic at least twice a year, you will help prevent gum disease and minimize your risk of heart attack or stroke. You will also reduce other long-term illnesses such as diabetes, dementia, and oral cancer, which have all been proven to be positively affected by Dental Hygiene visits. You will also benefit from early detection of possible dental problems, which can save you money in the long run, not to mention fresher breath, as well as a brighter and healthier smile!
How Often Should I Have My Teeth Cleaned?
We hear this question a lot! How often you need your teeth cleaned is dependent on a number of factors. In some cases, patients who are susceptible to calculus buildup may require cleanings every three to four months. Children are often recommended to see a dentist every six months for a checkup and cleaning until their brushing habits are established. Some of us are ok to see a dentist once a year for a checkup and cleaning. During your Dental Hygiene visit, we will determine the best frequency for your visits and will monitor how your teeth and gums are responding to treatment.
