Are you searching for Sedation Dentistry in Calgary? If you are among the many patients with anxiety around going to the dentist, Concept Dentistry can help. Not only do we have experienced, family practice dentists, but we also have a couple treatments that can ease your anxiety. We offer two types of sedation right here in Forest Lawn: nitrous oxide and oral sedation.
Are you a Calgarian living in Forest Heights, Valleyview, Dover, or another southeast neighborhood who suffers from a dental phobia that prevents you from getting the dental care you need and deserve? Knowing that Concept Dentistry offers you nitrous oxide sedation can help you to relax and to stop avoiding treatment due to your anxiety.
Nitrous oxide, also known as “laughing gas,” happy gas, inhalation sedation, nitrous, or N2O2, was discovered in the late 1700s/early 1800s. It is a tried-and-true, gentle and safe way to increase your comfort during dental procedures. The main effect is usually a feeling of euphoria, similar to being happily drunk; your senses will be dulled and your anxiety will be lessened. You might feel light-headed or get the giggles; your arms and legs may feel tingly or heavy.
The nitrous oxide is administered through your nose, to allow the dentist access to your teeth. Because you remain conscious and are able to communicate throughout the appointment, you can retain your sense of control. One of the best things about nitrous oxide is how quickly the effects begin to work, so you can relax within seconds of your appointment beginning. Nitrous oxide also wears off fast once your care is finished, so you can go back to your life in a normal state of mind after your appointment. Here at Concept Dentistry, our experts can evaluate whether you are a good candidate for sedation dentistry and what the appropriate dose is for you.
Oral sedation is another way to help reduce anxiety at a dental appointment. Instead of having gas being constantly administered during the appointment, you can take an oral sedative drug that will dull the anxiety but not induce unconsciousness. You might have heard of drugs like Valium and Ativan – these are two examples of oral sedative drugs that are designed to help you with generalized anxiety, fear of needles, or bad memories around the sights or smells of dental offices. If we determine that oral sedation is right for you, we’ll prescribe the appropriate drug for you to take in the day or hours before your appointment. The effects of oral sedation are much longer-lasting than those of nitrous oxide, and you’ll almost certainly need a buddy to accompany you to and from our conveniently-located Forest Lawn office.
